64-year-old, Disability Employment Services client, John, had previously worked in Aged Care. While he loved his role, he took a chance on a new direction with his career.

Over time, this new path proved detrimental to John’s mental health. He wanted to get back to Aged Care but wasn’t in a financial position to obtain all the qualifications and checks he knew he needed.

He started working with Job Coach, Ella, and the team at atWork Australia in Kings Meadow, TAS, he was determined to return to the Aged Care Industry.

“John shared he had a passion for helping others,” said Job Coach, Ella.

“He was very proactive, wanting to upskill to the latest qualifications, and renew his licences so he could return to work.”

During his time out of the industry, John had misplaced his birth certificate. The first thing Ella supported him with was obtaining a new birth certificate.

Once he had the required identification, Ella enrolled him in a first aid certificate to renew his certification.

They also organised a working with vulnerable people check, a police check and a NDIS clearance. All of these required checks, costing hundreds of dollars in total.

“If you aren’t working, the financial cost of entering the industry can be a big barrier,” said Ella.

Ella then supported John to update his resume and create a cover letter targeted to the Aged Care Industry.

“I knew John would have no trouble finding a job in the industry,” said Ella.

“He was passionate, experienced and the industry is always looking for quality candidates.”

When John was ready, atWork Australia started to connect with our employer network and within no time at all, John had an interview.

He is now back working in his dream career as a support worker, and atWork Australia continues to support him through In-Work Support.
