Workforce Australia client, Jerry*, lives in Peterborough, South Australia, with his elderly father and autistic brother. He left school early. Now, at 25 years old, he had very limited work experience and very low confidence.
“When I met Jerry, he was withdrawn, quiet and didn’t have a whole lot of confidence,” said Job Coach, Kiera, from the Peterborough atWork Australia office.
“His goals were to find good steady work, to help him save up for a car and eventually purchase his own home and travel.”
The atWork Australia team worked on building Jerry’s confidence by connecting him to our in-house Wellness Services and discussing motivational goal setting.
One of Jerry’s goals was to buy a car. So, the first step towards that, and one that would open more employment opportunities, was to support Jerry to gain his driver’s licence. atWork Australia supported Jerry to pay for driving lessons.
Jerry was also referred to the Skills for Education and Employment (SEE) program. The program delivers free language, literacy, numeracy and digital skills training to eligible Australians.
“We really focused on small steps to help Jerry reach his goals,” said Kiera.
“I didn’t want him to get overwhelmed, so in each appointment we took a small step such as driving lessons, the SEE program and applying for jobs together.”
While Jerry was still working towards his licence, Kiera and Jerry looked for roles nearby to his home that he could ride his bike to.
Jerry mentioned an old employer that he worked with, which was nearby his house. With his confidence starting to build, Kiera suggested Jerry reach out to see if they had any work available.
His old employer was keen to have Jerry back and asked him to start right away.
Jerry is continuing to study via the SEE program and continuing with his driving lessons. He is now supported through the In-Work Support team who is also helping Jerry to gain his white card and forklift licence to gain more hours at his current employer.
