From Campsie, NSW, Jeremy lived with anxiety and periods of depression due to his low self-esteem and barriers.
Jeremy is Indigenous and faced several barriers, such as insecure housing and poor physical health; he had been having trouble finding long-term employment as a result.
Jeremy wasn’t in a good state-of-mind and was facing some financial challenges. He couldn’t afford to focus on his personal appearance, in-turn affecting his confidence.
One of Jeremy’s biggest barriers to finding employment was that he had never learnt to job search effectively. But at the age of 36, Jeremy decided that it was time for a fresh start.
Jeremy worked with an Indigenous Support Trainer, who has expertise in life skills, as well as his new atWork Australia Job Coach, May. Together, the trio worked to build the skills and confidence needed to start applying for jobs. They provided a tailored and structured approach to support Jeremy; it was productive, and results driven. This motivated Jeremy.
Jeremy knew what sort of work he wanted, thus they set out applying for pick-packer roles in the local area.
Jeremy and May worked on updating Jeremy’s resume and the very next week he started submitting applications and calling local employers.
He quickly received notification from Sydney Tools for an interview. May supported Jeremy financially and purchased work clothes as well as an Opal Card to help him get from home to work.
Then, Jeremy’s Indigenous Support Trainer took him to visit an employer he knew in Construction Labour Hire. He dressed for the interview, looking smart in new clothes; the employer was so impressed that Jeremy started work two-days later.
To ensure that Jeremy’s employment was sustainable, his Support Trainer enrolled him into a course for basic construction labouring. This awarded Jeremy his White Card and Forklift Licence.
Not only did Jeremy arrive at work on time for his first day, he was doing this consistently while travelling to different sites across Sydney. Jeremy became a model employee.
Jeremy is looking forward to the future and financial independence. When work slowed down over December, he didn’t want to sit idle, so prepared to get barista work.
His health is better and his relationships with his family have improve drastically.
Jeremy built new skills and capabilities; taking a focussed approach to his job searching that lead him to an employment outcome within four-weeks.
“I enjoyed working with Jeremy because he was so committed to improving his life; he just needed some help to apply for jobs effectively and present himself to employers. He always answered the phone and was honest about his barriers. I look forward to following his journey as his life improves into the future.” – May, Job Coach
