Jane* is a 38-year-old Indigenous woman who comes from an LGBTQI+ community. Throughout her life she has faced multiple challenges and as a result she has been experiencing an extended period of unemployment.
With the support of atWork Australia, Jane has recently submitted her first job application in over a year and secured an interview.
Jane’s short-term goal is to secure entry level employment, so she can start building her skill set and hopefully one day progress to a secure position in the mining industry. To help her achieve this goal, she connected with atWork Australia’s Workforce Australia team in Corrimal, NSW.
When Jane first met her Job Coach, Aimee, her confidence was low, and she wasn’t sure how to get started on her employment journey. Jane explained that due to the challenges she has faced she has experienced homelessness, she’s had limited employment opportunities, and she hasn’t had the opportunity to develop her skills, which has impacted her confidence and self-belief.
Aimee began working closely with Jane to build her confidence and motivation towards employment. Aimee encouraged Jane to participate in atWork Australia’s internal programs, including Jobs for the Mob, MoneyMinded and the Indigenous Connections program. All programs focus on developing different skills, but all have the same goal of helping participants to progress towards employment.
Additionally, Aimee encouraged Jane to attend atWork Australia’s First Steps to Success event, which brings together local employers and service providers to promote the opportunities they can offer.
To provide an extra level of support, Aimee referred Jane to atWork Australia’s Wellness Services, where she could get professional assistance to manage her personal challenges.
Jane is continuing to make steady progress in her employment journey and is excited for her upcoming interview. “I called Aimee last minute to let her know I had an interview. The same day she arranged for me to get new interview clothes and organised transport to and from my interview,” said Jane.
Although Jane did not secure the position, she continues to take positive steps forward on her employment journey. atWork Australia will continue to support Jane for as long as it takes to find the right opportunity.
“Aimee has been a great help and support. She would always encourage me to do things I never thought I could do,” said Jane.
