In search of his first job, Disability Employment Services client, Jamie, entered the atWork Australia’s Hamilton Hill office nervously.
At 23-years-old, Jamie had not worked before, and he’d never been to an interview. This was a big first step for him. His Job Coach, Chellsea, acknowledged this, and took the time to explain atWork Australia’s services, and how we are here to support.
In this first appointment, Chellsea also learnt about Jamie’s Schizophrenia and how that impacts his life. “He mentioned he already works with a NDIS provider, and an Occupational Therapist (OT),” said Chellsea.
In coming months, Jamie and Chellsea continued to collaborate, but despite their best efforts, Jamie was not progressing. To achieve their shared goals, Chellsea and local manager, Chloe, invited Jamie’s NDIS provider and OT into the office to discuss next steps, and further tailored support.
“As an employment services provider, we collaborate with other health and disability professionals,” said Chellsea.
“It was great hosting Jamie’s team within the office to get a greater understanding of the supports Jamie needs to succeed.”
They were able to create a plan based on his needs, with advice from his professionals and consultation from Jamie.
Jamie decided to continue to have his weekly appointments but would also attend the office on two other days to use the client computers, or to get any further support he might need.
In these appointments, Chellsea and Jamie, would work together to determine what positions he would be interested in. They considered all industries and would apply for all suitable positions.
With preparation from Chellsea, he attended interviews to gain a further understanding of the process, and what he would be interested in. He was not successful in these positions, but they were a great steppingstone for him.
His persistence, and never give up attitude was always apparent, often attending appointments several hours early to look at the in-office job board.
Jamie has shown remarkable progress on his journey. atWork Australia is continuing to work with Jamie to find his dream first job.
