Elizabeth comes from a culturally and linguistically diverse background and speaks limited English. Along with the language barrier, she found her mature age (60) to be another barrier to finding work.
When Elizabeth started working with her Job Coach, Smita, through atWork Australia’s Doonside, NSW office, she spoke about the practical barriers she had to employment, such as limited identification documents and limited skills with technology.
Smita and Elizabeth worked together to co-design a tailored plan to support her into meaningful work.
Elizabeth participated in atWork Australia’s First Steps to Success program.
The First Steps to Success program creates an inclusive environment which brings a range of community support, employers and Registered Training Organisations into one central place.
She also completed a First Aid Certificate.
Elizabeth and Smita spoke about roles she could do within her barriers and looked at opportunities close to Elizabeth’s home. Soon she landed a role for a local cleaning company.
Smita learned that Elizabeth only had a landline phone, so she supported her to purchase a mobile phone and supported her in learning how to use her phone to check her new roster.
“Elizabeth said atWork Australia’s support means a lot to her. She appreciated the motivation and the practical support to help her into employment,” said Smita.
