After spending the past three years in prison, Workforce Australia client, Heinz, entered the atWork Australia office in Nowra, NSW seeking support on getting back on his feet and into sustainable employment.
Heinz was experiencing everyday challenges from drug use, high depression and anxiety. Initially he was not committed to attend appointments and his attitude towards job seeking was poor. This all changed when he met with his new Job Coach.
For their first encounter, Heinz was closed off and unenthused. His Job Coach took the time to get to know Heinz, cracking a joke and asking about his current situation and how we can assist. He discussed that he has unstable accommodation and needed food.
His Job Coach presented him with a full bag of food from the office’s ‘Need’s Shelf’ and contacted the local Nowra men’s homeless shelter. She was able to secure temporary accommodation.
In addition, his Job Coach also put him into contact with a professional Drug and Alcohol Rehabilitation Counsellor to assist in his journey to sobriety.
After several appointments with his Job Coach and his counselor, Heinz has now moved into his own place with his cousin, is no longer taking drugs and is working part-time in a role sourced by his Job Coach.
Heinz regularly attends his appointments now and drops in to see the Nowra team when he is in town running errands, with a big smile on his face.
The Nowra team describes Heinz’ journey as remarkable, stating “I am so proud of Heinz’ progress since I first met him. He now holds himself differently and has a better outlook on life”
“atWork Australia helped me a lot with my life and to gain employment that I am very happy with.” – Heinz, Client.
