In early 2023, atWork Australia received a phone call from client, Guy, who wanted to know more about how Disability Employment Services (DES) could help.
Since that phone call, Guy has gone from strength to strength, and is now working with atWork Australia as an employer partner to give more DES clients an opportunity for work.
After his initial phone call, Guy attended the atWork Australia office in Redbank Plains, QLD, and met with the atWork Australia team.
He was living with a physical disability and had previous work experience in workplace health and safety.
atWork Australia’s In-Work Support Coach Laine said all Guy really needed was to know he was supported, and atWork Australia was in ‘his corner’ as he applied for jobs.
“Guy was more than qualified for the roles he was applying for. He just needed support and daily reminders that he could do it,” said Laine.
He had seen a job advertisement he was interested in and wanted support to update his resume.
The atWork Australia team supported him to tailor his resume and he landed an interview.
Having been out of work for some time, he needed financial assistance to attend the interview, so the team organised a fuel voucher.
Guy was successful in his interview but then needed financial support to renew his first aid certificate for the role.
With this support from atWork Australia he was able to return to work in an industry he enjoyed.
Once in work, Laine helped Guy to access workplace modifications including a specialised chair to help support his health in the workplace.
Guy has now been in meaningful and sustainable employment for a year. He is now in a position where he supports the company he works for in their recruitment process, and is looking to work with atWork Australia to hire more people.
All with the goal to provide more people living with disability the opportunity to find meaningful work with the right support, like he once did.
