For the family-owned and operated pet shop Go Wild Pets and Produce in NSW, hiring a diverse workforce through atWork Australia led to one of their most dependable employees to date.
Ajeet, the manager at Go Wild Pets and Produce had previously used Disability Employment Services (DES) but had never worked with atWork Australia to find an employee.
This was until Ajeet was approached by Nelufar, an Employer Engagement Consultant at the atWork Australia Liverpool Office to trial a client for AccessAbility day. AccessAbility Day is an Australian Government initiative that allows employers to connect with people with disability. Employers can explore the concept of employing a person with disability, while also providing an opportunity for participants to gain an insight into a specific job or type of work.
Although initially hesitant, Nelufar was able to reassure Ajeet, stating “matching the right candidate to the right job is not only our passion but something we’re great at”.
Not long after, Ajeet gave DES client Christy an opportunity to shadow him at work for a day meeting customers, helping with general duties and assisting with the store’s pets.
Christy is 27 years of age and resides close to Go Wild Pets and Produce. Christy had been unemployed for 2 years due to social anxiety, depression and low-mood disorder.
Nelufar and the team at the Liverpool office were able to recognise Christy’s strengths in supporting people, and her passion for animals. They knew that a job as an Animal Attendant would not only benefit her but also benefit Ajeet’s local business.
After a successful AccessAbility day for Ajeet and Christy, Ajeet was so impressed with how Christy took to the role that he offered her a part-time position. Christy was over the moon to accept the role, in disbelief that she would not only be able to work and gain independence but could cuddle animals whenever she wanted.
Ajeet was pleasantly surprised with atWork Australia’s services, thanking the team and saying, “you have really helped me, everything has been so easy”.
Even though Christy started the role on part-time hours, she has been such an impressive worker that she now works more hours and is trusted with her own set of store keys. Christy is also being trained to open and shut the store.
Christy’s Disability Employment Services Job Coach, Yvette has noticed how Christy’s life has improved since finding work, saying “Christy looks ten times happier than she was before and her confidence has soared through the roof.”
Ajeet has been so pleased hiring through atWork Australia that any future recruitment needs will be conducted through their services.
“Christy is such a hard worker and very punctual, I can now rely on her for everything! She is making me lazy by taking care of the shop for me, she is a great match for our business!” said Ajeet.
