When Gary* came to atWork Australia’s Disability Employment Services office in Warrawong, NSW, he had recently been released from a long stint in prison. Gary was ready to make changes in his life, put his past behind him and move onto a brighter future.
Gary had a clear goal of what he wanted to do. He has a passion for cars, he wanted to gain new qualifications and pursue employment in the Automotive industry.
From day one, Gary engaged with his Job Coach, Destiny. He spoke openly about his goals and desire to return to work and contribute to society. He also shared that due to his past he had low confidence, no driver’s licence and experiences mental health concerns.
Destiny was pleased to hear Gary speaking about his goals, and together they developed a tailored plan for how atWork Australia could help him achieve them.
Destiny and Gary worked together to identify a suitable course through TAFE. Gary decided to enrol in a Certificate 3 in Automotive Refinishing Technology.
atWork Australia were able to provide funding to cover the costs of the course, allowing Gary to get an immediate start on his studies. Destiny continued supporting Gary throughout his studies, liaising with TAFE to ensure Gary could get additional assistance to complete his course, where needed.
Additionally, Destiny also supported Gary to gain his driver’s licence to increase his employment options.
Gary is currently working hard to complete his qualification. At the same time, Destiny and Gary began contacting employers within the Automotive industry to source suitable opportunities.
Due to their combined efforts, Gary successfully secured an interview. The team were excited for Gary and started focusing on how they could support him through the upcoming interview processes.
Destiny worked with Gary to build his confidence by discussing various scenarios that could occur in the interview. She also arranged funding for Gary to purchase new interview clothes and continuously provided positive encouragement.
When Gary walked through the doors at atWork Australia, he couldn’t imagine himself returning to work, despite him wanting it. Only a few months later, he has successfully secured a position as a Vehicle Accessory Fitter in the Automotive industry.
“Gary’s life has completely changed. He didn’t have the confidence or ever think he would be able to gain employment in his dream industry. We are so happy to see him turning his life around,” said Destiny.
