The transition from school to the workforce can be daunting. Money, independence and achieving goals are some of the benefits of getting a job when finishing school. The first job after graduating can also help to build confidence and self-esteem, and a solid foundation for the employment journey ahead.
Brandon, 19, from Clarkson, WA has moved to Australia from the United Kingdom. Brandon had no previous work experience. This, in combination with his low confidence and self-belief created barriers towards future employment for Brandon.
Improving his life and his confidence was important for Brandon and therefore he reached out to atWork Australia in Clarkson where he met his Job Coach, Ali.
Due to his young age, Brandon was unsure how to find a job and where to look for one. Ali assisted Brandon with building his resume and adding important details to it. Together, they spent some time filling out applications and improving Brandon’s knowledge about where and how to apply.
Brandon was not convinced that atWork Australia’s Disability Employment Services would be able to find him a job, but he was determined and put himself out there. Ali secured Brandon employment at a local McDonald’s. He was very surprised when he found out that he gained employment and was very happy and excited for this new chapter in his life.
Brandon felt very supported and acknowledged by his Job Coach. He says: “Ali was messaging me every week asking how I was going and if I needed anything.” This made him feel confident enough to always approach his Job Coach and reach out when he required help.
Brandon says: “I have been enjoying my new job and responsibilities. I also was awarded ‘Employee of the Month’ at my new work which has made me feel valued and appreciated. I want to continue working hard and progress with my life.”
Ali describes Brandon as an excellent client. He has always come to his appointments and was always punctual. Ali says: “Brandon is a great role model for the youth who are also his age. He showed determination and an enthusiastic attitude in every appointment. He strives to do his best and that was one of the main reasons he was able to find a job.”
Ali adds: “Brandon is a client that has showed everyone around him what you can achieve when you are focused and determined to achieve your goals. Brandon is an inspiration to others and as his Job Coach I am proud of the person he has become.”
