Aiden has a whole range of newfound skills and confidence after completing a training course that is set to move him into a completely new career direction.
It can be hard changing careers when you don’t have the set skills and this was the position Aiden, 38, found himself in when he contacted atWork Australia’s Armadale office in March last year. A mental health condition meant Aiden could no longer work in his previous role.
Dianne, his Job Coach with atWork Australia, says when she met Aiden he was actively job-hunting but wasn’t sure what sort of role he wanted.
“So we sat down and I let Aiden know that we’re able to help with a course to help move him along into employment,” she says.
Aiden was relieved, choosing to study for a Certificate III in Warehousing and Logistics, as an online course. This is for people who want to work in the logistics industry, in a warehouse environment. He was also supported to study for his forklift licence.
Dianne says once he started studying and attending his appointments with her, Aiden became much more positive in his outlook. He never once missed an appointment.
She also referred him to atWork Australia’s Jobs Now program, to give him a grounding in job search and workplace skills. The weekly group program helps job seekers with résumé and cover letter writing, interview skills, where to look for the right jobs, marketing yourself to potential employers, networking skills and more. Conducted with other job seekers, it’s the perfect way to share tips and support one another.
Now, having completed his study Aiden is looking forward to using his new skillset to find part-time employment. He sums up his experience with atWork Australia perfectly.
“Now I’m ready to get a job!” he says.
