Esmat arrived in Australia as a refugee, and for the past four years he was unable to see his children due to his visa status.
When he started working with the Workforce Australia team at the atWork Australia office in Moolap, VIC, he had already tried for citizenship three times.
He was struggling to focus on finding work with an uncertain future in Australia and the stress of not being able to see his family.
The team in Moolap knew that Esmat needed support to gain his citizenship before he would be work ready.
So together with the local pre-employment training facilitator, Preet, they started helping Esmat practice for his citizenship test.
Preet offered personalised, flexible and informal support to Esmat. They worked together to translate the questions so he could understand them better.
They practiced sample questions every second day before the exam and Preet served as a mentor and motivator for Esmat.
With ongoing training, support, language assistance and assurance – Esmat passed his citizenship test on his fourth attempt.
Passing this test has created a more certain future for Esmat and will allow him to travel to visit his family.
When Esmat returns he will be at a much better and more stable point in his life to join the workforce.
The team are looking forward to continuing to work with Esmat to help him gain new skills and open up the door of opportunity.
