60-year-old Ian was living in a Caravan Park in Nowra, NSW. With the rising cost of living, he often struggled to pay his rent.
He was connected with Workforce Australia Job Coach Sharon for support to find employment.
Ian had no qualifications, no licence and limited work experience. He found it difficult to communicate with potential employers and felt this was impacting his opportunity to find meaningful employment.
“Ian had approached a number of local employers already. He felt discouraged as he felt rejected by nearly all the local employers and without transport wasn’t sure what options he had left,” said Job Coach Sharon.
After understanding Ian’s barriers, Sharon and the atWork Australia team worked with Ian to create a personalised plan for his journey to employment.
They focused on coaching Ian in using appropriate language when speaking with employers and through the interview process.
They helped Ian purchase an Opal card for the local public transport system to increase his job opportunities.
With the regular coaching from Sharon, Ian started to feel more confident in his communication and approached an employer by himself.
He was successful in the role and excited to share the news with the team.
“After two years of unemployment, Ian landed a role in Landscaping,” said Sharon.
“The smile on Ian’s face said it all. I have never seen him so happy and feeling so accomplished.”
Ian now has additional financial security as he starts the new year.
