Atiqa, originally from Pakistan, is a refugee living in Australia. As a family of five, Atiqa needed work quickly to support her family.
As a new member of our community, Atiqa didn’t have a Drivers Licence, and had no work experience in Australia, and spoke little English.
She was also living with mental health concerns and was feeling a lot of stress about finding work quickly to support her family in this new country.
She was connected with Job Coach Taranum, in the Workforce Australia office in Mount Druitt, Sydney. Taranum also speaks Atiqa’s language, Urdu, so they were able to communicate well.
Taranum supported Atiqa to build a resume that would appeal to local employers, coached and practiced interviews with her.
Unfortunately, with no local experience, Atiqa wasn’t able to find work as quickly as she hoped for her needs, but with the support of the atWork Australia team, found work as a pick packer.
The atWork Australia team was beside her every step of the way, supporting her with her onboarding and paperwork, while financially supporting her with personal protective equipment. They also topped up her Opal card to ensure she had enough money to get to and from work in her first few weeks.
“While pick packing is not Atiqa’s long-term goal, finding work quickly was her short-term goal. She is happy to be in a good company and able to financially support her family,” said Taranum.
“It has been a deeply fulfilling journey both personally, and professionally, witnessing Atiqa achieve her goals,” said Taranum.
“Atiqa transformed challenges into opportunities, proving that determination knows no boundaries.”
