In 2013, Heshma moved to Australia from Persia. She had been unemployed for eight years before she reached out to atWork Australia’s Gold Coast office at the end of 2019. At the same time, Hesma had a back operation and was unable to walk. By the end of 2020 she had recovered enough to look for work.
English is Heshma’s second language and her communication skills in English were very limited. She did not think that anyone would ever employ her.
Heshma was introduced to her Job Coach, Tanya, who arranged regular appointments with her and organised interview training to build her confidence. Heshma was accompanied by an interpreter who was assisting her with the communication with the Job Coach.
At the same time, Heshma was also completing English lessons and over time started to understand English much better than she could speak it. Tracey, the Employer Engagement Consultant set up a work trial with an employer for Heshma, so they could see her skills. Her interpreter went along to the interview to assist with any language barriers.
Heshma was over the moon when she found out that she was offered a job as a seamstress. The whole family rang Tanya to say thank you for her help and they were clapping and cheering on the end of the phone. Heshma adds: “I am very, very happy!”
A Curtains and Blinds is a family-owned and run wholesale and retail business of curtains and blinds. Tracey says that the business has a real “family feel” and Joe, the employer, said they like to keep their employees’ long term. Mariana, the manager of the sewing room has been with the company for 32 years.
Joe says: “Heshma, who likes to be called Angel, has been a great addition to the team. She has fitted in really well with the team.”
Joe appreciates atWork Australia’s continuous support and adds: “It is helpful to receive a couple of relevant references from atWork Australia when we need them.”
Tracey adds: “Heshma is so happy to be working again. She was unemployed for eight years before coming to atWork Australia and now she has a job. She is thrilled.”
