Disability Employment Services client, Derek, had been unemployed for eight-years. He had an extensive knowledge for auto parts and a passion for cars, however, he lacked the confidence he needed to find employment on his own.
Then one day, Derek attended his first appointment with atWork Australia and was introduced to his Job Coach, Jamie.
Initially, Derek’s appointment attendance was sporadic; he was at the point of wanting to apply for the Disability Support Pension because he didn’t believe he could find employment.
Derek had general poor health and financial instability. He also lives with mental health challenges as a result.
However, the more appointments Derek attended with Jamie, the more his confidence improved and his attitude to employment changed.
At each appointment, Derek would chat with Jamie about cars; Jamie used these discussions to help boost Derek’s confidence and tell him that any auto shop would be lucky to have him as an employee.
Derek had never felt so supported or treated with so much respect and understanding.
Derek told Jamie, “This is the happiest I have been in many years”.
He has a newfound confidence and says he feels like he can live a ‘normal’ life; paying bills, fixing his car, improving his living situation, as well as buying and eating healthier food to drastically improve his health.
Jamie supported Derek to find part-time employment as a Sales Assistant / Parts Specialist in an auto shop.
Jamie said, “To see Derek gain employment after overcoming his barriers has been elating. I can really see how this is going to change Derek’s life. I couldn’t be happier for him.”
