At 61 years old, First Nations client, David came to atWork Australia’s Disability Employment Services office in Mowbray, TAS, wanting a few hours of work a week.
David just wasn’t sure where to start. He had no direct goals other than they wanted to find employment.
He met with Job Coach, Shannon, who got to know David, updating his resume and learning a little about what he liked and disliked about his previous roles.
Shannon, and David then met with atWork Australia’s Employer Engagement Consultant to identify his strengths and weaknesses.
One thing they identified was not a strength of David’s was his digital skills, however Shannon was on hand to support David with paperwork, applications and other computer-based requirements, during his journey to employment.
They landed on a few options for roles, that David was keen on pursuing. Shannon supported David to obtain his forklift licence which he would need for some of those roles.
As David lived remotely, atWork Australia also supported David with fuel vouchers so that he could attend the training required for the forklift licence.
Meanwhile, the Employer Engagement Consultant was working in the background, calling employers to see if they would be interested in hiring David. They also offered wage subsidies to these employers as an added incentive.
“David was always looking for roles himself. He never missed an appointment and was keen to find work,” said Shannon.
Soon David landed a role as a farm hand working approximately 15 hours a week which suited his needs.
atWork Australia helped purchase clothing for his new role.
He is now working towards obtaining his medium rigid truck licence (MR licence) so that he can become an even more valued member of his new workplace.
