Technology is rapidly changing in the job market. This is something that Disability Employment Services client, Dave, knows well.
At 64, Dave from Keysborough, Victoria, lives with a psychiatric disorder. He has been unemployed for the past four years.
One of the biggest barriers to Dave finding employment is being able to keep up with the digital skills needed to search for work.
When he first partnered with atWork Australia in May 2024, his Job Coach, Bashir, could see Dave needed some assistance with his digital literacy skills.
“Dave was submitting his job searches using the paper-based form,” said Bashir.
“He wasn’t confident applying online, especially with long online applications on a variety of different platforms.”
Bashir encouraged Dave to participate in a digital literacy course run by an external training organisation.
The course was called ‘Beginners computers and digital essentials course.’ The aim was to teach clients how to use a computer, how to write and check emails and use a smartphone.
“My Job Coach motivated me to do the course, and now I’m feeling more confident and relaxed,” said Dave.
After five months with atWork Australia, Bashir can see a big change in Dave’s digital ability.
“David is now able to navigate the internet, use emails, access his MyGov and approve his job plans online,” said Bashir.
Dave appreciates the assistance he has received and is now looking to purchase a computer to have at his home.
“This course will help me in the future. It’s a foundation I can use to have better knowledge of the internet,” said Dave.
Bashir will now work with Dave to search for jobs online that suit his employment goals.
“I feel more independent using my phone and doing online applications by myself,” said Dave, atWork Australia client.
