Workforce Australia client, Damien*, had years of experience as a forklift driver. However, when he found himself unemployed at 62, he needed support to find a full-time job that was right for him.
He started working with Job Coach, Ryleigh, from the Shellharbour atWork Australia office in New South Wales.
The first thing Damien needed help with was applying for roles. Technology and applications had changed a lot since he was last looking for work, and he needed Ryleigh’s help with online applications.
He shared with Ryleigh, that while he had experience as a forklift driver, he was open to any kind of role. He was even willing to travel into the Sydney CBD area if the role was near public transport, as he didn’t own a car.
Knowing the in-demand roles in the local area, Ryleigh suggested Damien upskill and complete his White Card and Traffic Control course. This would open even more employment opportunities.
Damien also participated in atWork Australia’s in-house Money Minded course to learn some new budgeting skills he could use with his reduced income.
While Damien was participating in these courses, the atWork Australia team started promoting him to our employer network.
By reaching out to our employer network, Damien landed an interview as a trolley collector and cleaner with a supermarket.
While this wasn’t the industry everyone first expected Damien to land in, his willingness to upskill and his commitment to finding work shone through.
As Damien previously mentioned to Ryleigh, he was willing to give anything a go and was looking forward to a new industry.
The team supported Damien through the application, practicing his interview skills and to purchase work related clothing.
He was successful in his interview and is still working in the same role today and thriving in that role.
