Originally from Wollongong, 25-year-old Kate moved to Sydney in 2019 seeking better employment opportunities and to live with her partner.
Kate lives with Asperger Syndrome, which has impacted her social interactions due to the fear that others may not understand her disability. This has led to low self-confidence and anxiety also.
In 2017, Kate completed a degree in Digital Media. Due to the small field of job opportunities in Wollongong in this industry, she struggled to find suitable work. Kate was hopeful her move to Sydney would open up a better chance of ending up in the creative and media industries.
When Kate joined atWork Australia through the Liverpool office, she was connected with Disability Employment Job Coach Yvette. Yvette could see Kate’s great creative ability from the start.
Yvette referred Kate to many roles in the creative field and also networked with her employer connections. Kate and Yvette worked on practice interviews and updated Kate’s resume and cover letter.
An opportunity for a company that provides sound, lighting and audiovisual solutions came up as a Customer Service and Brand Ambassador and recognising this was the perfect opportunity, Yvette helped Kate to apply.
After a successful interview, Kate was offered the role. Yvette states “Kate had the biggest smile on her face, she was very happy and thankful.”
In her new role, Kate supports the team to book appointments, help with customer service, and marketing and media also. Kate has a passion for analysing films, so she enjoys all aspects of her new role.
After a few months in the role, Kate is feeling happy and purposeful and looks forward to growing in her career. “Thank you for giving me the confidence to take that first step and put myself out there,” she says.
