“Over the moon”, was how Connor described his feeling after receiving the position as a Rink Attendant for a renowned ice-skating rink in the Lower Hunter region in NSW, according to atWork Australia Charlestown Job Coach Kelly.
However, this state of being was not where Connor was at prior to commencing with atWork Australia. With his limited employment experience and training, Connor was not receiving the full scope of opportunities that were available to him.
In addition to this, Connor lives with mental health concerns that have invariably compounded his chances of attaining and sustaining employment.
In lieu of employment experience, to ascertain where Connor might be best placed, atWork Australia Job Coach Kelly delved into Connor’s passions as a means to drill down further into what he might be best at. What this discovered was that Connor had a flare for Ice-Skating, in fact, he trains and competes in ice hockey.
Like so many, Connor found the chances of attaining work in the time of COVID-19 often untenable however, with the appropriate encouragement and support, these challenges were soon overcome.
With tailored assistance like resume and cover letter writing, customised for specific job vacancies, self-marketing, interview training through mock-interviews and the facilitation of a First Aid Certificate, Connor landed a job at an ice-skating rink in the region.
When Connor was offered the job, he said he was “Over the moon.”
The success of this could be attributed to the open communication that took place between the Job Coach and the client. Connor expressed that, because of this, he felt supported and reassured from start to finish.
Connor remarked, “I feel a lot happier since working, and my mental and physical health have improved.
