Finding employment can be a difficult process. When you combine significant health barriers and long periods of unemployment, it can be even more challenging.
After 10 years of unemployment, the very thought of returning to work can be daunting. When making big changes in life, often the first step can be the hardest. Clinton made a brave decision and reached out to atWork Australia’s Warnbro, WA, office to get support from the Disability Employment Service team to help him progress on his journey.
When Clinton met his Job Coach, Chantel, he shared that he had been managing multiple health conditions, including; recovering from various surgeries, living with a mental health condition and adjusting to new medications. Throughout these difficult times, Clinton was also dealing with insecure housing, forcing him to have to move multiple times.
Clinton was unsure about the direction he wanted to go in, so atWork Australia supported him to explore various pathways. Clinton received training so he could work in a kitchen, obtained his traffic management ticket, and eventually decided he wanted to be a Disability Support Worker. With the support of atWork Australia and his Job Coach, Chantel, Clinton enrolled and completed a Certificate III in Aged Care.
Now Clinton has his new qualifications, he began working with a new Job Coach, Liani, who would continue supporting him to secure employment. Liani connected with atWork Australia’s Employer Engagement Consultant, Ruechelle, and they both began contacting employers on Clinton’s behalf.
Their combined efforts paid off; Clinton secured a position as a Disability Support Worker. Ruechelle developed a relationship with Programmed Care at a local jobs fair. Clinton was the first atWork Australia client interviewed and employed by Programmed Care, Clinton has been such an incredible employee, his high standard of work has helped develop a strong relationship with the employer. Clinton’s employer said, “Clinton has been a fantastic addition to our team and made such a huge impact on the life of the many clients he is caring for.”
Gaining employment has sky-rocketed Clinton’s confidence, it has positively impacted his mental health and, in a previous conversation with the team, he mentioned how good it feels to work for his money. Clinton said, “You’re all fantastic, you have helped me with whatever I have needed to progress forward. atWork Australia helped me to realise what I wanted to do.”
Employer Engagement Consultant, Ruechelle, said, “Clinton has been a pleasure to work with. The dedication he has shown to not only re-enter the workforce, but to find a job where he can utilise his recent studies, was amazing to witness. Clinton has shown a true commitment to the job from the very moment I mentioned the opportunity.”
“I am really happy that I was able to find work. It has improved my mental health significantly and enabled me to have purpose,” said Clinton.
