After recently relocating to Corrimal, NSW, Indigenous Workforce Australia client, Cameron* was homeless, living in emergency accommodation. For assistance in gaining financial security through work, he connected with atWork Australia.

Cameron lacked confidence within his abilities to work. He hadn’t worked in four years, was an ex-offender, had limited digital skills and limited work experience. He needed tailored recruitment support from his Job Coach, Aimee, to help him with his unique needs.

“As a result of his history, Cameron did not have a lot of trust. I made sure to get to know him, and that he got to know me,” said Aimee.

“I wanted to let him know that we are here to support him on his journey. I outlined all the ways that we could help him.”

Due to his financial insecurity, Cameron wanted to enter employment as soon as possible. As a result, the atWork Australia team got right to work, searching for suitable, sustainable positions.

In the lead up to interviews, Aimee and Cameron worked together to polish his skills. Aimee also connected him with our internal indigenous connections team, for cultural support.

Cameron attended several interviews but was not offered positions due to his police record. Despite these knockbacks, Cameron did not give up. He was determined.

In collaboration with the local Employment Engagement Consultant, and the connections they had, an indigenous specific role was put forward.

Cameron was very interested in the position and applied. He was later successful in landing the job.

“Cameron was emotional when he found out he was successful. He thanked me for all my help, but it was all him. I knew what he was capable of, he just needed an employer that saw that too.”

In the lead up to his first day, atWork Australia financially supported Cameron in purchasing his work clothing and a public transport card. Food vouchers were also distributed throughout his entire journey.

Since starting work, Cameron’s confidence has skyrocketed.
