Carol’s job prospects were bleak, but rather than focus on her lack of experience she has embarked on a new learning path aimed at building a career in business management.
As a long-time carer, Carol had set aside her own ambitions to give her grandmother the help and support she needed. But, since her grandmother’s passing it became clear to Carol that, after spending most of her adult life performing unpaid caring duties, it was not going to be easy entering the workforce.
After researching her options, Carol decided to register with the Drysdale office of atWork Australia, knowing they are experts in supporting people into employment and building skills and job-readiness through training.
Her Disability Employment Services Job Coach, Shareece, initially worked with Carol to identify her work goals. Shareece knew that with no formal qualifications or work history Carol would struggle to find a suitable vacancy.
At this point Carol told Shareece that she had always been interested in computer programming and business management. They agreed that she would need to study a relevant course to find satisfying work in this sector, and decided the Certificate III in Business Management would give Carol the best knowledge base to build on her skillset.
“Having not studied since high school 25 years ago, Carol was understandably very anxious
about going back to school,” Shareece said.
She then spent many hours providing counselling to Carol to boost her confidence and equip her with the ability to manage the stresses of studying and job-seeking.
In just one short month since meeting her dedicated Job Coach, Carol has now started her course and, with the support of Shareece, is on her way to making a career for herself.
“I look forward to supporting Carol in her studies and helping her find meaningful employment once she completes her course in six months’ time.
“Watch this space!” Shareece said.
