Upon entering the atWork Australia office in 2022, Brodie knew he wanted to be a mechanic, he just needed assistance to get there.
26-year-old Disability Employment Services client, Brodie who is also supported through NDIS, was looking to make the leap into his dream career. To work towards his goals he had support from Job Coach, Jermyn, from the Macquarie Fields, NSW office.
Whilst getting to know Brodie, his skills, barriers to employment and previous working history, one thing was clear – his passion to be a mechanic. To ensure his future employment was sustainable, Brodie asked some questions about his respiratory disorder and anxiety to best gage how this would affect him at work.
With all this information in mind, Jermyn was able to construct a job plan would get him where he wants to be, at a pace that worked for him.
The first part of this plan was finding an apprenticeship to give Brodie the technical skills he needed.
“We were able to connect Brodie with a local mechanic to assist in facilitating his dream. He was placed as an apprentice with that employer,” said Jermyn.
Unfortunately, after several weeks within the apprenticeship, it fell through at no fault of Brodies. With the support of Jermyn by his side, he did not give up. “This experience made Brodie nervous to re-engage and continue with his apprenticeship,” said Jermyn.
“In these next stages, atWork Australia were able to assist Brodie to ease his anxiety by attending job interviews and supporting him through the process. He had the passion; he just needed the right support and encouragement to back himself.”
As a result of his persistence and the support, Brodie was later successful in obtaining a full time Tyre Fitter position, as another starting step into the industry. He was financially supported by atWork Australia on this next stage of his journey.
“Brodie has become a more confident person and believes that he can achieve and succeed in his new employment,” said Jermyn.
We know this to be true after his employer adds “Brodie comes into work with great initiative and has demonstrated his great knowledge in tyre fitting. We can’t wait to upskill Brodie by putting him through additional courses to help further his career with us”.
