“I want to settle into full-time permanent employment and carve out a future for my son and me,” said Workforce Australia client Brian, when asked about his employment goals.
When Brian came to atWork Australia in Morley, Western Australia, he was homeless and living with mental health conditions.
“When I first started working with Brian, he would decline our offers of assistance,” said Job Coach, Cailyn.
After some time of encouragement and motivation from Cailyn, Brian began to accept help. Brian had discussed with Cailyn that out of many employment options, warehousing and factory work interested him the most.
Cailyn supported Brian to obtain the required tickets and licences he would need to start, including his forklift ticket.
She then encouraged and motivated Brian to start looking for new employment, by offering to assist with obtaining a new phone for job searching and communication. She also supported him with food vouchers.
“Brian became more confident with the education, clothes and phone that he was provided to look for work and attend interviews,” said Cailyn.
“As a struggling father, the food assistance helped him focus on employment, rather than what to eat.”
Brian relied on public transport, so with the support of Employer Engagement Consultant, Ant, they found a role for Brian that was a short walk.
Cailyn then supported Brian to prepare for the interview with new clothes, words of encouragement, and reminders about how to ace the interview.
“Brian was so happy when he found out he had the job after eight years of unemployment,” said Cailyn.
“They helped me. Do it for your family, like I did for my son,” said Brian.
