After seven years of unemployment, Disability Employment Services client, Brian, entered the atWork Australia office in Port Adelaide, SA, looking for assistance to get into work.
For the past seven years, Brian has spent his time caring for a family member, but he was now ready to re-enter into the workforce.
Brian has osteoarthritis, which limits his physical movement. This has affected his ability to work effectively in his previous roles.
When Brian first met with his Job Coach, James, they discussed his osteoarthritis and how it effects his ability to work, to ensure his future role was sustainable for Brian.
It was within this appointment that Brian highlighted that his goal was to work in a bottle shop. He already had his RSA and is knowledgeable in the industry.
Together, Brian and James created a tailored job action plan to get him into his dream role as a Bottle Shop Attendant. This plan included sorting out his debts and purchasing a car to get to-and-from work. This was to be paid with the money he is receiving from the settlement of his parent’s home.
Whilst Brian was working on his finances, James worked on sourcing suitable roles, advocating on his behalf, and securing interviews with potential employers.
After a very successful interview with a local bottle shop, Brian was offered casual employment as an attendant. As part of the onboarding process, Brian was required to undergo a Working with Children Check as well as a Police clearance. Brian received financial support from James on these requirements.
James states “I believe Brian has had a very smooth journey with atWork Australia – within a few months he has been able to address his barriers to employment by working on his physical restrictions, buying a car, paying down debts and putting himself in a position where he was able to find gainful employment in his desired role.”
Brian was very appreciative of the support and guidance that James and the atWork Australia team in Port Adelaide provided. Although his time with us was short, it proved to be very beneficial. He has gotten his life back on track.
Brian states that he is now closer with his family and is more confident because of his new position. He is learning new skills and thoroughly enjoying it. He now wishes to take on more work.
“I am really happy with all the support you have provided, James. You deserve to be recognised.” – Brian, Disability Employment Services Client, SA.
