Disability Employment Services client, Brendan, lives with Autism, an intellectual disability and a moderate speech impairment. He is also a sports fanatic.
When Brendan heard of a volunteering opportunity at the Melbourne United Basketball home games through the Sunshine West atWork Australia team, he was keen to give it a go.
He is confident and enjoys putting himself out there. However, he can get overwhelmed in some situations. This has previously been a barrier for Brendan when it comes to maintaining employment.
This volunteering opportunity has allowed Brendan to work through these challenges, becoming more comfortable in overwhelming situations.
atWork Australia has been in partnership with Melbourne United for the past two seasons, providing opportunities for atWork Australia clients to work on skills that will support them to progress to employment. Coordinated by atWork Australia’s Employment Engagement Consultant, Kylie, she says the program helps clients in many ways.
“Brendan loves sports. This was an opportunity for him to use his passion to learn new valuable skills for the employment market,” said Kylie.
Since volunteering, Brendan has demonstrated commitment, resilience and leadership skills.
“Brendan originally started handing out clappers but has since been given several other opportunities to assist, such as being in charge of the mascots, and also assisting with the kids involved in the half time entertainment,” said Kylie.
“These new leaderships skills will be useful on Brendan’s resume as he pursues factory or café work, which are his current employment goals.”
“I enjoy helping people and making new friends,” said Brendan.
Every year, atWork Australia help thousands of clients like Brendan expand their skills and qualifications to help them gain the right job with the right employer. Call us today on 1300 080 856 or enquire online to find out how we can help you meet your career goals.
