William, also known as Billy is a proud Kaniyang Elder in the local area. He is 57 years of age and has spent the last six years in-and-out of seasonal casual work, but was looking to take the next step in his employment journey.
In January 2022, after recently losing someone close in the family, Billy was experiencing trauma and grief. His confidence and motivation were also low. He was looking for tailored support and guidance, and that is just what he received from Job Coach, Chelsey, and the atWork Australia Katanning, WA team.
During his initial appointment as a Disability Employment Services client, Billy and Chelsey worked on developing a tailored job plan that supported his employment past, values, and hobbies.
It was within this session that Billy told Chelsey about his diabetes. Despite being on his way to being fully medicated, this would still influence his work life.
Considering all this information, Chelsey, and Billy brainstormed jobs that he would enjoy – in hopes for both fun and sustainable work. In their searches, they came across a Tour Guide position at a local cultural and visitor centre.
Billy was overjoyed by the thought of this position, as it allowed him to teach visitors about something so special – his culture. As a result of his excitement, Chelsey and Billy created an updated resume and cover letter. The goal was to showcase Billy’s skills and experience, and to impress the employer.
After a successful interview and onboarding process, Billy was offered the position. He was ecstatic.
Chelsey was able to support William further by purchasing the appropriate clothing required.
This month, Billy will celebrate one full year in employment. He gives his thanks to Chelsey and the team in Katanning for all the support he was provided within all stages of his journey.
Billy states that the extra income has made an impact on his family. “I am now able to afford to do more things than I could have previously.”
Billy was also recently featured on an episode of Destination Australia. You can watch it here.
“Billy has come such a long way since he commenced, he should be so proud of himself. Seeing the transformation over the past 52 weeks has been amazing; watching him go from strength to strength has been a pleasure to be a part of.” Said Chelsey.
“[Having a job] has made me more confident. I love meeting people from all walks of life.”– Billy, Disability Employment Services Client, WA.
