Deakin is a young Indigenous Workforce Australia client based in St Mary’s, New South Wales.
At 21 years old, Deakin did not have much experience with employment and managing his own finances.
So, while his Job Coach worked with Deakin on identifying his employment goals, Pre-Employment Facilitator, Shameer, encouraged Deakin to participate in the MoneyMinded program.
MoneyMinded is an ANZ financial education program, teaching clients how to make informed decisions and manage money to reduce financial stress.
Deakin found the course so beneficial, he then requested to be enrolled into a second internal atWork Australia course for First Nations clients, called Jobs for the Mob.
During this course he connected with other First Nations clients, who were on similar journeys to employment as Deakin. Employment Facilitator, Shameer, said the connections helped motivate Deakin.
“I was able to help Deakin by creating a peer support network, where clients provide motivation and emotional support to one another,” said Shameer.
After Jobs for the Mob, Deakin participated in our Jobs Now program. Another short course, this time focused on resume preparation and job interview skills.
After the course Deakin’s resume was much stronger and he was feeling more confident than ever when it came to interviews.
“The Jobs Now workshop has help boost Deakin confidence, which is essential when seeking employment,” said Shameer.
“Through practice interviews, feedback on their resume, and encouragement from peers, Deakin is ready to start job searching.”
“By using the support of his Mob through networking Deakin has received numerous job offers including a bartender position which he is keen on pursuing.”
The atWork Australia team are now working with Deakin as he looks at his job options to find the right role for him.
