Client Kelly stands between two atWork Australia staff members. She says “I am more relaxed, confident and happy. I have found employment that feels like home.”

Disability Employment Services client and NDIS participant, Kelly, lives with Multiple Sclerosis (MS).

Kelly was looking for part-time work, two days a week.

She shared with her Job Coach, Rebecca, from the atWork Australia Campbelltown office, that her goal was to work in administration.

She had experience but just needed support to find a role that suited her abilities, with an employer who was understanding her condition.

During her appointment, Kelly and Rebecca were looking at job search websites. Kelly spotted one she thought suited her skills and background in administration.

She was disappointed to learn that the role was advertised as full time.

“This particular role that Kelly was interested in was originally advertised as full-time, however, due to the role description and location of the employer, we decided to call them anyway,” said Job Coach Rebecca.

“I was able to chat with employer, Michael, and just asked if he had considered a part-time employee.”

This also showed Rebecca if the employer fit Kelly’s criteria for being an understanding and inclusive employer.

Michael considered the idea once Rebecca discussed Kelly’s previous experience and advocated for her. Michael requested her resume to be sent.

In the meantime, they continued to apply for other vacancies and Kelly interviewed for other roles. During this time, Kelly really felt the role with Michael would be the best fit for her.

With the support of Rebecca to work through her nerves, Kelly phoned Michael herself to follow up.

After speaking with Kelly personally, Micheal agreed to an interview, and Kelly landed the job. It also happened that Michael had lived experience with MS, with a family member also living with the condition.

“It was about finding an employer that could work with the hours that suited Kelly and could be understanding of her health needs,” said Rebecca.

“Kelly’s family and friends have commented on a noticeable change in her overall happiness. Kelly feels more confident in herself.”
