Andrew (52) lives in Kings Meadows, Tasmania. He lives with depression, a back condition and osteoarthritis, and was searching for work where he could also manage his conditions.
He worked with the atWork Australia Disability Employment Services team who took the time to get to know Andrew, his skills, abilities, hobbies, and employment goals.
The team learnt that Andrew had to have a role with flexibility to manage his regular physio appointments, and to provide time to rest his back.
They discussed a work from home role would be ideal for Andrew, and they encouraged him to turn his hobby into a job.
Andrew had already completed a gunsmithing course in his own time. He had a strong interest and passion for building guns.
The team assisted Andrew to purchase the things he needed to get his business off the ground including new boots, fuel and business cards.
They also assisted with specialized equipment including a scope – which is a camera used to see down the barrel of a gun.
Andrew is now supported by Joe in the In-Work Support team. Joe continues to check in on Andrew to see how his business is going and if there is anything we could do to assist him, such as helping him report his income to Centrelink.
“atWork Australia has helped me whenever I have requested or needed any assistance,” said Andrew.

“It’s a form of comfort, just knowing I could rely on help when and if needed,” said Andrew.
“Thanks to atWork Australia I have found meaning in my life. I am now able to get out of bed and am finding alternative ways to manage my pain.”
