56-year-old, Amanda, had a few hours of work at a local café in Albany, Western Australia when she first started working with the Workforce Australia, atWork Australia team.
She shared with her Job Coach, Zoey, that she was unfulfilled by this work and wanting a change in employment.
Zoey started to ask Amanda a few questions, getting to know her, and her interests and hobbies. She learnt a lot about Amanda in these initial chats and together they realised she might have an interest and passion she hadn’t pursued before.
“Amanda let me know she had been recently helping her neighbour and was really enjoying it. So, we talked about a potential career shift into the caring industry,” said Zoey.
With no previous experience in the industry, they started from the basics with an NDIS check and first aid course.
While they were working on opportunities for Amanda to enter the industry, she shared she was feeling stressed and anxious around her financial situation.
The team referred Amanda to Money Minded, an ANZ initiative, designed to help people build their knowledge and confidence about financial decision making.
atWork Australia also supported Amanda financially to purchase some new glasses and to gain a working with children check.
With some basic certificates and checks under her belt, Amanda was then referred into a caring role, and she was successful.
“Finding work in a role she is passionate about, has given Amanda a new belief in herself and her abilities,” said Zoey.
“She will now have some financial stability and not have the stress and worries of whether she can afford to pay for future bills. Amanda also said she is going to save up, to travel and visit her family in Perth.”
