Alex’s journey to employment was on an upwards trend from the start. He just needed the support of atWork Australia to push him towards his goals and help him overcome his barriers.
Job Coach Tara met Alex (23) at the Morisset, NSW atWork Australia office.
Alex is autistic and lives with mental health conditions. He was working in a pick-packing role for over two years when he found himself with reduced hours.
He came to atWork Australia to help support him to find sustainable employment so he could support himself.
Alex finds it challenging interacting with others and has low self-confidence. He also relies on public transport which limited his options for work.
He was comfortable doing a role he already knew, so Tara and Alex worked on finding a pick-packing role he could thrive in.
They started with Tara sharing tips and strategies for effective job searching, supporting with new interview clothing, and practicing interviews. She also provided emotional and wellbeing support when Alex was unsuccessful in an application or interview.
“Alex worked hard to gain employment regardless of what life threw at him and he didn’t give up when he didn’t hear the answers he wanted to hear,” said Tara.
“His biggest achievement aside from employment has been the increase in his self-confidence and determination to succeed.”
“Alex is a pleasure to support. He has really come out of his shell with his new role, and I am excited to see what the future holds for him. He should be extremely proud of himself.”
