Adelle is a young Indigenous woman who has experienced trauma in her past. Due to these experiences, she has a limited employment history, low motivation and confidence, whilst also living with mental health concerns.
Adelle has a long-term goal of working in the WA mining industry. However, she has found it difficult to secure a position and has spent the last two years unemployed.
It was time to try an alternative approach. In doing so, Adelle connected with atWork Australia’s Workforce Australia team in North Perth, WA, to work towards her goals..
Adelle was being supported by Job Coach, Wendy. As the pair got to know each other, Adelle shared some of the barriers and challenges she was facing. Wendy understood that in order for Adelle to move forward and achieve her goals, she would first need support to manage her existing health challenges.
Wendy referred Adelle to atWork Australia’s Wellness Services where she could get professional advice from a Wellness Advisor to help process the trauma she had experienced.
With regular support, Adelle was gradually building confidence and was progressing on her journey. She soon secured a casual position with a local supermarket.
Although this was not her end goal, Adelle continued to work with Wendy and was taking positive steps towards her goal.
To further develop Adelle’s employability skills, she participated in atWork Australia’s Jobs for the Mob program. The program connected her with a mentor who provided further guidance on this journey.
While Adelle was focussed on working towards her goals, she was experiencing financial hardship. atWork Australia were able to relieve some of the financial pressure by supporting her with food vouchers.
atWork Australia supported Adelle to renew her driver’s licence, gain a police clearance and to put steps in place to achieve her desired position.
Adelle continued to put herself in a position to be successful and her hard work was about to pay off. She attended an information session and was connected with one of atWork Australia’s employer partners.
With the support of atWork Australia and a local Aboriginal organisation, Adelle secured a Utilities role.
“This has had a great impact on Adelle’s life and for her family. She has more self-belief and knows that she can do this. We will continue to support her every step of the way,” said Job Coach, Wendy.
“Thank you to Wendy, and atWork Australia for helping me gain employment in the mining industry,” said Adelle.
