Saman is certainly on his way to building a better life for his family in his adopted country, having landed his dream job more than two years after migrating here from Iraq.
The 48-year-old qualified accountant sought help from atWork Australia’s Fairfield office in early 2019, after finding he was being passed over for bookkeeping and accountancy work. His mental health had declined as the knockbacks continued, with depression and anxiety affecting his daily life.
Saman’s atWork Australia Job Coach, Carine, said that after years of trying and failing to find work, he needed support.
“Because he had very little working experience in Australia, he was often overlooked for work he felt he could do, so as a result he was experiencing stress, tiredness and low self-esteem,” she said.
Carine, however, could see that Saman was resilient and motivated to achieve his goal of finding work in the accounting industry, to continue his career in the sector. Her support of Saman began with reminding him of his many skills and vast experience, to boost his confidence. They then worked on refreshing his resume and practising all-important interview techniques.
After enquiring about suitable vacancies online and via atWork Australia’s networks, within a few months Carine was able to set up an interview for Saman with local business, Ray White Real Estate. Thanks to all their preparation, Saman was successful and has been working at the agency for several months.
Carine said it was the ideal type of job that Saman had long been waiting for.
“Saman’s thriving – finding something which ticked all the boxes was a big relief for him,” she said. “And with the job being local, he’s also able to spend more quality time with his family.”
Saman has much praise for Carine, saying she has been encouraging and professional.
“I appreciate her consideration and support as she worked with me to help me achieve my goals. I feel good about my journey and my future,” he said.
Saman has now developed a passion for real estate and sees himself progressing within the industry and atWork Australia will also support him further when the time comes to obtain his real estate license and certificate.
