Almost a year ago, Disability Employment Services client, Janine, was contacted by her atWork Australia Job Coach to see if she would be interested in being involved in a pilot program in the local Woolworths. She would be testing the new accessible checkout which was being implemented.
As a wheelchair user, the accessible checkout provided extra space and new features to support Janine to bag groceries for customers.
Not only does Janine appreciate the workplace modifications Woolworths has in place to allow her to work, but she also appreciates how flexible they are. Janine now works three days a week, at times that suit her. This helps her to maintain her health. She also now has supported the implementation across three different locations in Sydney where accessible checkouts have been implemented.
“They are absolutely wonderful employers. They are so supportive of all kinds of abilities,” said Janine.
“Working has allowed me to have more financial freedom, and I really enjoy being able to come to work, meet new people and have a chat.”
The store Janine works in is near a retirement village and Janine says her accessible register has been a benefit for her customers as well as herself.
“Many of my customers appreciate the lower counter,” said Janine.
“It’s much easier for them to lift their groceries onto. So, not only does the stores accessibility support me to have a job but it also supports the customers when they are shopping.”
Janine is supported by her In-Work Support Coach, Sandy from the Blacktown office, who is ready to help Janine celebrate a year in a job she loves.
