In early 2022, Disability Employment Services client, Alexander, nervously entered the atWork Australia office in Cranbourne, VIC looking to progress into employment.
Alexander lives with ADHD, learning and intellectual disabilities, which, has made it hard for him to find sustainable work in the past.
Having skills relating to construction and being a handy man, he expressed interest for working within the sector, once again. Job Coach, Shukriya, and the broader team in Cranbourne, worked with Alexander to find a suitable position that would be both enjoyable and sustainable.
With Alexander not having a license, the team worked on finding a position close to home.
In April, Alexander found an availability with local handman business in Hoppers Crossing – Hire a Hubby. After presenting this opportunity to Shukriya, they both agreed that this would be the perfect position for him, as Hire a Hubby have worked with employment services in the past. So, they sent through his resume.
Business owner, Grant, was impressed by Alexander’s resume and invited him in for an interview, which he was successful in.
Alexander was ecstatic to have found out he had obtained the position and could not wait for his first day, despite his nerves.
atWork Australia were able to assist Alexander obtain all the necessary work clothing and equipment he needed for his new role.
Alexander has now been in this position since April 2022. He can now complete tasks on his own, with minimal/no supervision. Some of his tasks include ripping out carpets and demolishing bathrooms.
Alexander’s mother, Marie, is so proud of how Alexander has grown, and how confident he has become. There is a noticeable improvement in Alexander’s social interactions and his ability to talk with not just other staff, but also clients of the business.
