22-year-old client, Dekayla, had never worked in paid employment when she was introduced to her Job Coach, Anna, at the atWork Australia Workforce Australia office in Ravenswood, Tasmania.
With limited experience, Dekayla had low confidence in her skills and abilities, and she also lived with anxiety.
Anna took the time to get to know Dekayla and learnt that she enjoyed making soy wax melts and candles as a hobby. Anna asked if she had considered turning her hobby into paid employment, and suggested Dekayla register for the Self-Employment Assistance Program.
The Self-Employment Assistance Program is a free Australian Government initiative and is funded by the Department of Employment and Workplace Relations. It helps people start, develop and grow a small or micro-business through 12 months of free mentoring, workshops, accredited training and financial support.
Dekayla was very excited about the opportunity, especially knowing she would have the support of mentors, and Anna by her side during the process.
Anna supported Dekayla to apply for her ABN number and register a business name.
The atWork Australia team also supported her to purchase a laptop to participate in the program, and with the cost of business insurance to get her up and running.
“Dekayla’s confidence is now shining through,” said Job Coach, Anna.
“Dekayla has stated that she is really proud of herself and so are her family. By being able to start and focus on her own business, it has given her the confidence boost she didn’t realise she needed.”
The atWork Australia team will continue to support Dekayla as she embarks on her self-employment journey.
