Sometimes in life, when you are going through a tough period it can feel like all your problems begin to pile on top of each other and you cannot solve any of them. That is how Leanne was feeling when she first came to atWork Australia’s Workforce Australia office in Hindmarsh, SA.
Leanne was facing a lot of personal barriers, including financial stress, mental health concerns, and on top of that, caring for her children. Leanne was anxious, she was struggling and felt like she could not get out of a rut. She felt as if every time she took a positive step forward, another problem would a rise and she would be worse than before. Sometimes during tough times, you just need a friendly person to listen. Leanne found that person in her Job Coach, Sona.
When Sona began supporting Leanne, she was very patient, she listened and acknowledged the challenges Leanne was going through. As Sona listened, she encouraged Leanne to focus on one problem at a time, as every problem has a solution. Most importantly, Sona reassured Leanne that she was not alone, and atWork Australia were here to support her.
As a starting point, Sona supported Leanne to participate in voluntary work at an Aged Care Facility. This was a great opportunity for Leanne to build her confidence and gain experience in a working environment. Leanne’s exceptional work ethic impressed the organisation. They said if she were qualified, they would offer her a job.
With atWork Australia’s support, Leanne enrolled in a Certificate IV in Leisure and Health. Leanne admitted she found the course challenging, as it had been a long time since she had been at school, and she was not confident with technology. However, with Sona’s support, Leanne persisted and continued with her studies.
Unfortunately, in the end the organisation did not employ her. Although Leanne was disappointed, she took a great deal of confidence from the experience and was motivated to pursue other opportunities.
Soon enough, Leanne secured a position with another employer. In preparation to start work, Sona assisted her with obtaining a Police Check, drivers license, vehicle registration and tools she would require for work.
atWork Australia were able to support Leanne through a challenging period of her life as she was managing a personal crisis. She is now happily employed and looking forward to being able to support her family.
After being supported by atWork Australia, Leanne feels like a new person, on a new path. Leanne, said, “atWork Australia has been very supportive and patient with me throughout my ups and downs.”
Leanne’s Job Coach, Sona, said, “It has been a great experience working with Leanne. She has had a very difficult past. She has overcome so much and is now living a happy life.”
