Fabyen is grateful for another lease of life thanks to the continuous support of atWork Australia and the way they changed his life.
From Mooroopna in Victoria, 27-year-old Fabyen lives with depression and anxiety. He also experiences back pain due to a previous back injury.
Prior to engaging with atWork Australia, Fabyen was in a very bad shape mentally, dealing with a relationship breakdown, homelessness, feeling suicidal and worthless, and having no support network. He had almost given up and felt that everything was going wrong in his life.
Fabyen had a limited employment history and had been unemployed for over two years. He prefers to work by myself or in smaller groups and is unable to stand for an extended period of time due to back pain.
Due to being unable to find employment himself, Fabyen contacted atWork Australia’s Mooroopna office where he met his Disability Employment Services Job Coach Brad, who was able to build a rapport with Fabyen.
Brad worked with Fabyen on building up his confidence. He also created a resume for him which not only showed his employment history and transferrable skills, but also his technical skills including mechanical knowledge, due to working on cars as a hobby.
atWork Australia paid for a couple of days work trial with an employer so that Fabyen could be given an opportunity to prove himself.
The employer was willing to work one-on-one with Fabyen, utilising his handy skills to build furniture. atWork Australia assisted with the cost of PPE gear including a respirator, safety goggles and ear muffs.
Job Coach Brad is proud of Fabyen’s transformation. Brad explains: “It has been great to see where Fabyen started – with no support network and nearly giving up on everything – to have him in employment and to have changed his life around.“
Fabyen was very grateful that Job Coach Brad didn’t give up on him, called him regularly to check in and offer support, and helped him find a supportive employer who was able to give him a chance and also be understanding of what he was going through.
“Brad was very supportive and went above and beyond to ensure that I was comfortable with the employment and employer. Brad was extremely understanding of my personal circumstances, was non-judgemental and wanted to help me change my life around,” states Fabyen.
Fabyen is grateful that his employer is happy with his work ethic and standard and that he has ongoing employment. “I wouldn’t be where I am today without the ongoing support of my Job Coach,” explains Fabyen.
Fabyen says: “Thanks so much Brad. You have helped me and my life more than what you will ever imagine.”
The employer is looking into opening another work shed this year to make more furniture and offer Fabyen more hours and opportunities.
