For 22-year-old Isaac from Ermington, NSW, finding work with atWork Australia was a way to not only bring in income, but a way to start a new life in Australia.
Isaac was born in Africa and recently immigrated to Australia to live with his aunt and uncle. Isaac also lives with an intellectual disability. To find work, Isaac enlisted the support of atWork Australia’s Disability Employment Services.
Isaac joined the atWork Australia Ryde office and was connected with his friendly Job Coach Li Li. Li Li and Isaac started working together to establish Isaac’s job goals and to support Isaac to become job-ready.
Li Li was able to do a police check for Isaac, create a resume, and together they practised mock interviews. While Isaac was becoming ready for employment, the coronavirus pandemic began. Although this didn’t halter Li Li or Isaac’s motivation to find work, Li Li decided to enlist the support of atWork Australia’s Employment Engagement Consultant Roger to help find Isaac suitable work.
Roger used atWork Australia’s network of employers to get Isaac an interview for a trolley collection position.
After a successful interview, Isaac was offered the role. atWork Australia supported Isaac to be able to complete his job, with the purchase of work boots, clothes, and a White Card Certification, to ensure Isaac was ready for the role.
Isaac was thrilled and began working at a local large supermarket not long after the interview. For Isaac, finding employment was more than finding a way of making an income; this job means Isaac can start to build his new life in Australia. “I feel more confident about the future,” Isaac said.
Isaac’s family were equally excited and appreciated all the support atWork Australia provided Isaac to find work. Li Li and Roger said, “We were thrilled to give a deserving young person a chance to start his new life in Australia, and support him toward a bright future where he can pursue his dreams.”
“I appreciate everything atWork Australia has done for me to help me get started in Australia. They are the best,” says Isaac.
Isaac’s employer is grateful for their new team member, commenting “It was a joy to assist Isaac with finding employment and to see how excited his new job has made him. His family is proud of him, and we’re thrilled to have had the opportunity of employing Isaac.”
