Donald is in a new job with a grin on his face after a shock accident left the 61-year-old badly injured and unable to return to his former career.
When Donald approached the Moe, Victoria office of atWork Australia he was still coming to terms with a sudden change in his circumstances. He had hurt his arm in a motorcycle accident that meant his lifelong career as a rigger – a demanding job requiring physical strength for handling rigging gear – was over.
Donald was assigned a Disability Employment Services Job Coach. He told his Job Coach, Marjorie, that he had tried to find work in other industries but had been unsuccessful and he was unsure about his future.
Marjorie said with some help and guidance, Donald would be back in work in no time. “Donald had a willing attitude to give anything a go,” she said.
During their initial appointments, the pair discussed how Donald could recreate himself and decided that re-training would be the best approach. Donald was enrolled in a traffic management course so he would be well equipped for work in the traffic control industry.
While Donald spent time reskilling, Marjorie kept up their appointments, focusing on boosting his motivation as well as practical steps such as updating his résumé and interview skills.
It wasn’t long before an employer offered Donald a full-time role in traffic control.
To say that Donald was pleased is an understatement. “He was over the moon with happiness and relief that he can get his life back to normal,” Marjorie said.
Donald was so grateful to have a job that he presented his Job Coach with a thank you card and an acknowledgement that she had helped to change his life.
A thank you note from his wife also said how happy she was to “have her old happy husband back like he was before the accident”.
