Thi lives in Green Valley, New South Wales, is 60 years old, speaks Vietnamese, lives with a health condition and has been searching for employment for more than a year.
A Vietnamese restaurant recently opened near Thi’s home. She thought this could be a great opportunity for her, as she is unable to drive, and she could communicate with the business owner due to their shared language. However, she lacked the confidence to approach them to ask about employment.
Thi worked with her Job Coach, Mary at the atWork Australia Miller branch who supported her to achieve her goal to work at the Vietnamese restaurant.
“My Job Coach Mary is helpful, approachable and was happy to help me achieve my goal,” said Thi.
She was enrolled in an English language course and Mary helped her to buy shoes suitable for kitchen work.
Together they approached the Vietnamese restaurant and explained additional supports the restaurant could access such as a wage subsidy for hiring Thi.
The restaurant was excited to have the extra assistance it needed and were flexible and accommodating to Thi’s health conditions.
Thi’s boss said “She is an extremely motivated employee and happy to be at work. All she needed was assistance to get to work, so I pick her up as it’s on my way.”
Thi was surprised at how easy the process was to reach meaningful and sustainable employment, with the help of atWork Australia.
“The process has been very easy. The Job Coach has always been there to help me. Mary is very helpful,” said Thi.
