At 21 years-old, Disability Employment Services client, Keera, was experiencing significant personal challenges. Hoping for a new beginning and a fresh start, Keera moved from the Gold Coast to Tasmania.
Due to events in her past, Keera had lost connection with her family and friends. Starting fresh in a new state she was feeling isolated and alone. At this challenging time in her life, Keera connected with atWork Australia in Kings Meadows.
Keera was being supported by Job Coach, Ella. As the pair got to know each other, Keera opened-up about her traumatic past, sharing that she now lives with PTSD, anxiety and depression. Additionally, Keera shared she is also receiving support to overcome her substance dependency, which she is continuing to work on.
Keera has limited qualifications, limited work experience and her confidence was low. However, she was eager to find employment so she could support herself and continue focusing on her rehabilitation.
Through consistent support from atWork Australia and her Job Coach, Ella, Keera began to build her confidence and her motivation continued to grow.
Soon enough, Keera secured a part-time retail position.
Keera’s new workplace was situated within a shopping centre that had full time security. Given her past, having the security guards close by made her feel comfortable and safe.
atWork Australia has supported Keera to purchase work clothes and continue to support her during employment.
Starting employment has helped Keera settle into her new home. She remains focussed on attending her drug and alcohol program and hopes to continue to build her hours within her current workplace.
Keera has recently passed her probation and has shared with the team that she is loving her new job.
Keera is continuing to take positive steps to rebuild her life. As a result of her success, she is beginning to reconnect with her family and friends.
