Traci knew what she wanted to do when she contacted the atWork Australia office in Shepparton. Having had previously worked in roles helping others, Traci wanted to upskill and follow her dream of assisting people in hardship.
Before contacting atWork Australia and Job Coach Belinda, Traci had been unemployed since 2006. A workplace accident had meant Traci could not return to her original role. As a result, she developed mental health conditions.
Trying to remain positive, Traci volunteered at a local aged care facility, but eventually stopped this due to mental health.
“In 2014, Traci began engaging with a mental illness fellowship who soon had her away for camping weekends and road trips,” Belinda tells.
These interactions and Traci’s persistence to better herself led her to atWork Australia and Belinda, who helped her find a course that could guide her into the community services industry.
Traci already knew she wanted to complete a Diploma of Alcohol and Other Drugs. She also thought that by taking part in work placement during the course might lead to an ongoing, meaningful role.
Traci was very excited to finally start the Diploma and was incredibly grateful to atWork Australia for the financial support with fees and supplies.
Traci says, “Belinda was extremely supportive. She always greeted me with a smile and checked in on me if I wasn’t feeling great.”
“Belinda called in my first week of starting the course to see how my first day was. Now, just two weeks in and my confidence and self-esteem have not only improved, but this course has given me purpose,” Traci adds.
Belinda has also offered Traci a number of leads for volunteer work so she can gain further knowledge during her studies, and will continue to provide guidance and support while Traci completes her Diploma.
Traci’s experience shows that atWork Australia will always work toward a job plan that is tailored to an individual’s specific needs.
