atWork Australia’s Job Coach, Mukesh, had a chance meeting with Martin on the street near the Waterloo, NSW, Disability Employment Services office.
They got chatting and Mukesh learnt about some of Martin’s barriers and his desire to find work. He suggested Martin should come into the office one day to learn how atWork Australia could support him into employment.
“At first Martin just dropped in for a coffee and a chat. He found the office welcoming and the team friendly, so he decided to register with us,” said Mukesh.
Martin lives with mental health conditions and other conditions that impact his concentration. He also has a limited support network around him.
Firstly, Mukesh assisted Martin with applying for a cleaning role, however, he became frustrated with the long recruitment process, opted out and abruptly left the office.
But Mukesh didn’t give up and presented Martin with another opportunity from his own network of employers who first offered him a work trial and then employment.
At 63 years old, Martin has returned to the workforce as a General Hand in a fruit, vegetable and florist shop, where he mainly works in the florist section.
“atWork Australia supported Martin to purchase an apron, gloves and scissors. He told me he is still enjoying his job, and I am so glad we could support him into meaningful work,” said Mukesh.
“Martin has had a big smile on his face every time he has come to the office since commencing employment. He is more open to interact with everyone, willing to engage in conversation and is far more active.”
“Mukesh has been brilliant in finding me a position in a flower shop. He has gone out of his way to support me, including with an apron, gloves and secateurs I needed for the role,” said Martin.
