The Psychiatrist, the Psychologist and the ex-Patient: A Frank Discussion on Schizophrenia
27/06/2011
On a cold and wet June evening 6 members of the atWork Australia Psychology Team attended a free public lecture on schizophrenia, which was presented by Dutch psychiatrist Dr Dirk Corstens, UK psychologist Eleanor Longden and ex-patient and now consultant, Ron Coleman.
Although the three presenters offered three insights into the treatment and management of this condition, a common message was conveyed by all – interventions into schizophrenia need to focus more on the patient and their story, providing an opportunity to foster hope and recovery.
The presentations were informative, enlightening, moving and at times confronting.
The audience, which contained professionals, consumers and family members, were also offered the opportunity to ask questions.
Judging by the rousing response the presentation was well received, and deservedly so.
