From free kicks to a free lunch for Luke!

One exciting result for a job seeker from at Work Australia's Spearwood office was to be selected as the Multicultural Officer for the ‘Auskick’ programme sponsored and run by the South Fremantle Football Club.

Luke Silich (pictured on far left) took up this exciting, new position on the 1st May, to assist young primary school aged children to learn to play Aussie rules football. Those youngsters involved were fortunate to have Luke’s experience and enthusiasm to assist them in developing skills both on and off the football field. Each participant was presented with an “Aussie Pack” at the start of the programme, sponsored by atWork Australia. This consisted of a holdall containing a football, diary, drink bottle, AFL Poster book, 2 caps, Membership card for 2 AFL games and stickers.

Luke’s role encompassed marketing 'Auskick' in addition to training groups of young children to play Aussie rules in their school environment. Liaising with different bodies in the local community was another part of this role, including government organisations and multicultural agencies.

The project was designed to involve the families of the participants. Whilst the children received coaching for this very Australian sport, at the same time their families were encouraged to integrate into their local communities.

Gala Day, on 8th July, celebrated the culmination of this successful and innovative programme, which took place at the Morris Buzacott Reserve in Kardinya. It hosted wonderful meals from several different cultures, face painting, bouncy castle, drum playing and handball and kicking competitions. The heavy downpours in no way dampened the enthusiasm and enjoyment of these youngsters and their families.
